CHECK OUT WHY ENGINE OF TATA NANO IS IN REAR RATHER THAN FRONT

Why is the engine of the Tata Nano in the boot(rear) and not in front?

The Tata Nano is a city car manufactured by Tata Motors. Made and sold in India, the Nano was initially launched with a price of one lakh rupees or ₹100,000 (US$1,500), which has increased with time. Designed to lure India's burgeoning middle classes away from motorcycles, it received much publicity.

The engine of the Tata Nano in the boot due to following reasons :-

  1. This Car is RWD.
  2. The Car has only 625cc and produce only 50Nm Peak Torque.
  3. So the weight of car has to be reduced as the engine produces low power.
  4. If Engine was in Front, then a Propellor shaft would be required to transmit the power to rear which would increase the weight.
  5. Also If Engine is placed in Front, then the space left would be less and hence Less Comfort.
  6. Also the Car of less weight having Engine in Front would shift the CG(centre of gravity) towards Front and hence steering effort required would be more.
  7. Steering would feel very heavy because of more wieght at the front of the car. (Now it comes with Power Steering but it didn'thave it when it was launched)
  8. Front wheel's size would demand an upgrade to at least the size of the rear tyre this raises the cost plus the car would understeer.

  1. In above explanation the one reason is that the propeller shaft is required to transmit the power but the car could be front wheel drive like the others cars so no weight will be increase or no power loss....
