What is BHP, PS & NM in automobile?
BHP (Brake Horse Power)
When the fuel mixture inside an engine explodes, it generates enormous amounts of pressure. This pushes the piston downward and the power by which is getting pushed downward is known as Indicated Horse Power. This is the maximum power which you can get practically. But the engine is never friction-free. When it moves, the pistons rubs against the cylinder wall, the connecting rod and the piston pin create friction and there are various other parts which generate friction force on movement. When you add all of these(frictional horse power) and subtract it from the indicative horse power, you are left with brake horse power; the power which is available at the end of the crankshaft.
Brake horsepower (BHP)= Indicated horsepower (IDP)- Frictional horsepower (FHP).
PS
It is a German word which means Pferdestärke -equivalent of horsepower or Torque ,the actual power produced by the engine. This also measures the engines power at its output shaft (flywheel), with the engine as it would be inside the car (so all accessories and ancillaries connected and a full exhaust). The number might be different because the use the metric system.
NM
Newton Meter is unit in SI and is standard way of expressing the same horse power produced or torque produced by the engine. This is the strength an engine has (the turning power). To understand it think of a 1m wrench attached to a point. This point can turn and exert an X amount of force at the end of the wrench. So if a car has 400nm it will exert 400N of force at the end of the wrench.
1 pferdestarke = 0.9863200706195 horsepower
1 pferdestarke = 735.49875 newton meter/second /watt
